The University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) is a national-level teaching examination conducted in India to determine the eligibility of candidates for the role of Assistant Professor and for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.
It is held twice a year for a total of 83 subjects conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

LATEST UPDATES ON UGC NET EXAM- JUNE 2024
1. The UGC NET June 2024 exam date was changed from June 16 to June 18, 2024, to avoid a clash with the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which is scheduled for June 16 as well. This decision was made in response to feedback from candidates who were concerned about the overlapping dates of these two important exams. NTA will conduct the exam on a single day for all the subjects across pan India. Here is the official notice posted on the official website:
2. The UGC NET Exam June 2024 will be held in OMR Pen & Paper mode.
The NTA notified that the upcoming June 2024 UGC NET exam will be held in pen and paper mode, marking a shift from the established. Computer Based Testing (CBT format.) The decision has been taken due to candidates facing difficulties such as poor network connectivity, inadequate maintenance of computer devices at exam centres, and power issues, among others. Hence, the Offline mode of Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet using pen and paper has been decided as a mode of conduct.

From the academic session 2024-2025, the NET scores can be used for PhD admission by all the Indian Universities and Colleges instead of conducting the entrance exams. 4. Eligibility criteria for candidates with a 4 Year/8 Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme: As per the UGC latest updates, candidates pursuing 4- Year/8- Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme and are in their last semester/year may also apply for the UGC-NET. They are allowed to appear in a subject (the List of Subjects and their Codes for UGC – NET June 2024 are given in Appendix-II) in which they want to pursue a Ph.D. irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor’s degree.
The candidates qualifying in the NET, based on a four-year undergraduate degree, will be eligible for the award of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for admission to the Ph.D. However, they will not be eligible for appointment as Assistant Professors.
