How to Make a Vision board?
Creating a vision board involves only one rule, that there is absolutely NO rule. It is a personal activity that can be customized just as you like it, there is no way you can ever mess it up. Here are some steps that you can follow to create your vision board.
Pen Down Your Goals
Your inspirations and motivations go up on this board. Ask yourself one question: where do you want to be in the next few months, how do you want to feel? Spend some time thinking about these questions, and make a list to define your future goals in various areas (e.g. relationship, personal, financial, educational, health, social). You don’t have to cover all the area’s but prioritize the ones you wish to work on. Make a handwritten list. A different kind of energy flows into handwritten notes and lists, rather than typed lists. This would help you put into perspective what you want from your life in the coming 12 months. Also, help you expand your focus on those set goals, intentions, feelings and values.
Align your goals
To proceed with this step, find inspiration from the objects around you that align with your goals, that can go up on the vision boards. These can be words and pictures from different magazines. But expand your search to fabrics, books, newspapers, magnets, postcards, letters, stickers, clothing tags, leaves and flowers. Look around, there are endless possibilities to choose from.
Take an hour out every day for a week to collect images and objects that define your goals. They don’t have to be a literal representation of the goal. When picking out these objects and images focus on how it makes you FEEL. Go with your first intuition, if it is something you really want in your life, pick it up immediately. For example: If you are looking for a job in the corporate field as a psychologist, you don’t have to find an image that matches a picture of a psychologist sitting in an office. A picture that defines any job, or an image that resonates with the work that psychologists do would also work to inspire you.
Be mindful when selecting the images and objects. Add quotes, sayings, pictures, that remind you of some place and people, that inspire you and represent how you FEEL. Things that you would want to see in your space every day.
Brainstorming and Mapping of the Board
The FUN starts here!
Here’s a list of supplies that you would need to start creating your board.
- Board – You can choose any board you are comfortable with. Here are some options for you – Cardboard, poster board, pin board.
- Scissors, Cutter
- Glue
- Pins, Clips to secure images (if required, depending on the board)
- Magnets (depending on the board)
- Markers, Crayons, Paints, Chalk
- Stickers
- Washi tapes, Fabric, Ribbons
- Embellishments – sequins or gems (if you wish to add and they make you feel good, then go for it)
The biggest requirement to map out the board is TIME. Give yourself a good amount of time to arrange the board.
Put on some music, get into the comfiest clothes and get immersed into the process that is about to begin. Start by putting out all the images and objects you have collected on the board. Trim and refine the objects and pictures. Arrange and rearrange the images until you feel inspired and content with the outcome. Edit and keep creating until you are happy with the layout that is established. Simply have a good time and lots of fun during the process of creating this board. If you are a social person and enjoy having company, you can also invite your friends over and have a vision board-making party.
Tips:
- Don’t glue down anything on the board until you are content with the layout.
- If you wish to create layers, glue pictures from the centre and not from the edges. Once you’re happy with the end product, glue down the edges.
- If you wish to add stuff later, leave some empty spaces.
- Display
Find a place for your vision board where you can view it regularly and it can provide daily motivation and inspiration. Like in your office, room, near your study desk or nightstand. You can also put it on as your screensaver.
Hope this inspires you to create your vision board, or as I like to call it “Dream Board”. If you plan to make one, do share your boards with us. Best of luck with your Dream board Journey.
